Welcome to the wonderful world of garden railroading! Though this fascinating hobby is over century old, it has never been more popular than it is today, and nothing can match its appeal. It's a hobby that can involve the entire family. In the outdoor enironment the railroad is changing with the seasonsof the year, the weather, and even the time of day. You are faced with many of the same challenges as a full-size railroad, which is all part on a realism that nothing else can match.

Granville Tailer Woods was an inventor who held more than 60 patents in the U.S. He was the 1st African American mechanical and electrical engineer after the Civil War.
Self-taught, he concentrated most of his work on trains and streetcars. One of his notable inventions was a device he called the Synchronous Multiplex Railway Telegraph, a variation of induction telegraph which relied on ambient static electricity from existing telegraph lines to send messages between train stations and moving trains.

Edwina Justus (July 11, 1943) is an African-American trailblazer engineer who is best known for being Union Pacific's first black female train engineer.
In 2018, Justus was honored in a Durham Museum exhibit.
